Case Study on Intranet

What is Coca-Cola Enterprises?
Coca-Cola Enterprises (CCE) is one of the world’s largest Coca-Cola bottlers. It manufactures, bottles and markets Coca-Cola products in Belgium, France, Great Britain, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden – including sparkling soft drinks, sports and energy drinks, juices, and waters.
What was the challenge?
In October 2010, CCE sold its operations in North America and acquired the Coca-Cola bottling operations in Norway and Sweden. This created a company with 13,000 employees operating solely in Europe. As part of a drive to increase productivity and create a sense of belonging to the new organization, a project team was created to research, develop and execute how digital communications could help employees to act more as ‘one business’.
What did the team do?
First, they carried out 1,500 hours of research during 2011 to find out what employees and the business needed. They found that:
1. Employees wanted more timely, accurate and relevant information that would help them do their jobs more effectively.
2. Employees were not aware of the full potential of the existing digital tools at CCE, which had led to poor adoption and an over-reliance on email.
3. The workforce is highly mobile, so any new intranet needed to be accessible wherever employees were working.
They decided to:
1. Deliver a cutting–edge intranet with new social features to provide a consistent user experience for all CCE employees: a common homepage; updated design and navigation; and global and local content in five languages for 13,000 employees based in US, GB, Benelux, Norway and Sweden.
2. Migrate the existing sites (six in all) to a single consolidated SharePoint 2010 platform. This needed to provide fast access to key HR tasks and a suite of best class collaboration tools.
What did they create?
iConnect was launched in April 2012. It is multi-lingual, with a revolutionary design which puts the spotlight on:
- Communication: local news complemented by global news and blogs in local languages.
- Collaboration: Chatter, MySite and Team sites for sharing and more.
- Action: for all the HR transactions for effective self-service delivery.
And it’s available everywhere: desktop, kiosk, home and mobile.
What is the outcome?
A 10-fold increase in page views.
A four-fold increase in weekly visitors and significant uptake of news.
More than 6,000 employees are now using Chatter.
750 collaboration groups have been created.
What made this intranet an #insidestory award-winner?
The entry scored highly with clear objectives, strategy and tactics, and excellent outcomes which tied back to the objectives. It demonstrates strategic communication in action. iConnect is accessible, collaborative and innovative. It achieved its objectives to build one site for all that improved collaboration and ultimately gave employees the tools to do their jobs more effectively. It has impressive statistics and adoption rates, which shows the site clearly suits its audience.
